Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 3, 2026
Overview
SafeBrowz is a Chrome extension that detects scams and phishing websites in real-time. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data we collect and how we handle it.
We do not collect any personal data. SafeBrowz runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server owned by SafeBrowz.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- Your name, email, or any personal information
- Your browsing history
- Passwords or login credentials
- Financial information
- Location data
- Cookies or tracking data
How The Extension Works
When you visit a website, SafeBrowz:
- Checks the URL against local pattern databases (runs in your browser)
- Queries public security databases with only the URL being checked
- For suspicious sites only, sends page text to an AI service for analysis
All scan results are cached locally in your browser. No browsing data is stored externally.
Third-Party Services
SafeBrowz queries the following public security APIs to verify website safety:
| Service | Purpose | Data Sent |
|---|---|---|
| Google Safe Browsing | Check if URL is malicious | URL only |
| PhishTank | Check if URL is phishing | URL only |
| URLhaus | Check if URL distributes malware | URL only |
| RDAP / WHOIS | Check domain registration age | Domain only |
| AI Analysis | Analyze page content for scams | Page text (suspicious sites only) |
| HaveIBeenPwned | Password breach checking | First 5 chars of SHA-1 hash only (k-anonymity) |
Only the URL or page content of the website being checked is sent to these services. No personal data is included in any request.
Password Breach Check
When you type a password, SafeBrowz checks if it has appeared in known data breaches using the HaveIBeenPwned API. This uses k-anonymity: only the first 5 characters of the password's SHA-1 hash are sent. Your full password is never transmitted to any server.
Data Storage
Scan results are cached locally in your browser using the Chrome storage API:
- Stored only on your device
- Expires after 24 hours
- Can be cleared by removing the extension
- Never transmitted to any external server
Community Database
SafeBrowz fetches a community-maintained blacklist/whitelist from a public GitHub repository every 6 hours. This is a one-way download - no data about your browsing is uploaded.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or transfer any user data to third parties.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
